Washington -- Three Michigan health insurers will be "early adopters" of a key provision of the nation's new health care reform policies, a House aide confirmed Wednesday.

Priority Health and HAP have agreed to extend coverage to children up to age 26 on their parents' health plans ahead of the deadline for companies to comply, said Alan Mlynek, a spokesman for Rep. Regarding HAP's implementation: Beginning with plan years that begin on or after 9/23/10, the Health Care Reform law will require dependent child coverage until the age of 26.  The Secretary of Health and Human Services has been encouraging plans to adopt this provision before its effective date to avoid any gaps in coverage that may occur for those people who may otherwise lose their plan eligibility.  HAP has decided to adopt this provision prior to required effective date.  At this point, it is unclear as to when HAP will have the appropriate regulatory authorization to offer this extended coverage.  The Legal Department is currently working with the Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation to expedite the authorization.
